As a pharmacist, I've experience in acute and ambulatory settings preforming in roles from point-of-care to administration. Family and friends routinely approached me with medical concerns ranging from questions about medications to advanced care planning. Just as we routinely utilized language interpreters, I found myself in the role of medical interpreter with the goal of assisting them understand the information presented and how it impacts them. My role as a medical interpreter has expanded beyond family and friends. In working with the patients who are diagnosed with chronic and complexed medical conditions, I have found that successful outcomes require a partnership with open communication between the patient/caregiver(s)/family and medical provide. We focus on helping the patient/caregiver(s)/family understand current treatment and/or treatment options. Understanding focuses on benefits, adverse effects and outcomes of prescribe treatment. The patient/caregiver(s)/family are then able to make a decision based on patient's culture and values.
