Informed by my journey as a special needs mom, and using the skills I developed as a labor law attorney in the UK, I help clients navigate their mental health benefits to get greater reimbursement. I use the consumer frameworks and mental health parity regulations to lodge appeals, grievances and formal complaints.
In addition to strong written argument, my strategy is to leverage relationships to draw attention to the unique challenge of finding and seeking reimbursement for mental healthcare. With self-funded plans, I will often interface directly with the employer to show how the third party plan administration is failing the employee, in breach of the mental health parity protections. Sometimes this can lead to discretionary decisions in favor of the employee. In all cases, I educate my client about how to understand their plan type and make the most of it for all their care.
You will give me a brief overview of the issue, and the stage you are at in resolving it. I will describe what potential solutions might look like. I will explain the difference between full service advocacy, and on-call advice and support. I will explain why you will benefit from an independent patient advocate, versus somebody engaged by your employer, or somebody you may have spoken to at your health plan.
